Scottish SMEs with innovative ideas are being encouraged to explore the SMART: SCOTLAND grant programme, which provides funding for feasibility studies that can help turn high-risk, high-potential R&D concepts into commercial opportunities.
The SMART: SCOTLAND grant, delivered by Scottish Enterprise, is designed to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) undertaking ambitious research and development projects. The funding helps businesses assess the technical and commercial viability of innovative ideas before progressing to full-scale development.
Available to Scotland-based SMEs across a wide range of sectors, including manufacturing, energy, digital technologies, robotics and AI, materials, biotechnology and sustainability, the programme supports projects that demonstrate a significant technological advance and have a clear commercial outcome.
Successful applicants can receive funding covering up to 70% of eligible project costs for small enterprises and up to 60% for medium-sized enterprises, with grants of up to £100,000 available. Feasibility studies can run for between six and eighteen months.
The initiative forms part of Scotland's wider economic transformation agenda and aims to support priority areas including the energy transition, the growth of innovation-led industries, and investment that drives productivity improvements.
To be eligible, businesses must be based in Scotland, or planning to establish operations there, and must demonstrate that their project involves technical challenges and innovation that advances their industry or sector. Applicants must also own, or have the rights to use, the intellectual property required for the project and retain ownership of any IP developed through the funded work.
The programme also requires funded organisations to align with the Scottish Government's Fair Work and net zero commitments. Once an application is submitted, a dedicated case officer guides applicants through the assessment process.
