Strathclyde’s DMEM Industrial Group Projects: Bridging Academia and Industry
The Department of Design, Manufacturing and Engineering Management (DMEM) at the University of Strathclyde is inviting industry partners to collaborate on its Industrial Group Projects (IGP) scheme. This initiative connects senior undergraduate and postgraduate students with real-world challenges posed by companies ranging from start-ups to multinationals. Over the course of an academic year, student teams work closely with academic mentors and company representatives to develop innovative solutions, often culminating in prototypes, CAD models, and strategic reports.
The IGP offers mutual benefits: companies gain access to fresh perspectives, cutting-edge university resources, and potential recruitment opportunities, while students experience hands-on project management and design in a professional context. Past projects have included process improvements, product development, and simulation analysis, with several concepts progressing to prototyping and production.
The programme fosters leadership, collaboration, and innovation, with structured milestones ensuring consistent progress and feedback. Companies interested in participating are encouraged to submit project briefs by August each year via the DMEM website.
As (CeeD Member) Graeme Ralph of Spirit AeroSystems notes, “Spirit have had a range of interesting projects over the years… resulting in follow-on internships and permanent roles.” The IGP continues to be a launchpad for talent and transformative ideas.
