Update in The Edinburgh Guarantee

We ran a valuable information session in partnership with The Edinburgh Guarantee this week, which explained some recent changes to the scheme.

The Edinburgh Guarantee was established in 2011 to address the needs of school leavers who were unable to move into a positive destination following the last economic downturn. Not surprisingly, the number of positive destinations is down compared to last year (Feb 2020 to Jan 2021). Where the employment rate in Edinburgh had been relatively high, during the past year Edinburgh has seen a 148% increase in unemployment claimants and the true impact of the pandemic will not be fully understood until the furlough period ends in Autumn 2021.

The City of Edinburgh Council has therefore decided to refresh The Edinburgh Gurantee which has evolved to help Edinburgh citizens, from all backgrounds, across the city to be able to easily access and progress in fair work, training or further education.

Through bringing together local government, business, colleges, voluntary sector organisations and national programmes they are making it easy and rewarding for organisations to play their part in helping citizens achieve this.

The Edinburgh Guarantee is not a programme or a funded package. It’s a belief that everyone has something to offer and that the city, by working together, can deliver a better future for our young people and for our economy.

How can your organisation help?

The Edinburgh Guarantee is not a 'one size fits all' approach. They want to support employers to pledge what they can. Opportunities you offer can range from paid employment to supporting young people to build employability skills.

You could ....
  • Offer Employment: Full time, part time and/or apprenticeship
  • Host a placement or workplace visit
  • Share sector knowledge and expertise
  • Provide training to individuals looking to secure employment
  • Sponsor EG to host employability sessions and events
  • Pledge something else? Talk to The Edinburgh Guarantee team
There is a lot of support available to employers who do get involved, including help with advertising jobs and reaching out to candidates, employer training and funding support.
