Johnstons of Elgin have worked with the world's finest natural, biodegradable fibres for more than 225 years, specialising in luxurious Cashmere and Merino Wool designs. The brand draws on its rich Scottish history and takes inspiration from the local landscape to create knitwear, clothing, accessories and Home Interiors fabrics in its own weaving and knitting mills. They are holders of The Queens Award for Enterprise for their commitment to sustainability.
The exquisite craftsmanship synonymous with Johnstons of Elgin results from more than two centuries of experience, and many of the skills and techniques used have been passed down through generations. The company’s Elgin site is the only vertical weaving mill in Scotland, meaning everything from dyeing and blending to spinning and teaseling happens in one location – taking raw fibre through to the finished product. Some of the 7500 dyes in the Johnstons of Elgin colour library were developed as long ago as 1856. Their Hawick knitting mill utilises Wholegarment Technology to create seamless designs, knitted in 3D, while other knitwear is finished using traditional hand methods.
In 2021, Johnstons of Elgin's commitment to improving their sustainability was recognised by The Queens Award for Enterprise in the Sustainable Development category. The brand are founder members of the Sustainable Fibre Alliance (SFA), working exclusively in Mongolia to restore grassland and ensure the well-being of Cashmere goats and their herders. They also support the Australian Merino Wool growing industry, sourcing wool from farms that are committed to the welfare of their animals. The brand are on a journey to reduce their environmental footprint, continually improving their sustainability year after year.
After over 225 years, Johnstons of Elgin remain proud to be Made in Scotland. As Royal Warrant holders, they understand that some processes are better left untouched, taking their time to ensure their products will last for a lifetime. Johnstons of Elgin’s store locations include Elgin, Hawick, Edinburgh, St Andrews and London.
