The Scottish government’s Making Things Last Strategy will move Scotland towards a more circular economy, a key strategy for economic growth that transitions us from the take-make-dispose model of today to one that extends the useful life of materials and products.
A truly circular economy is a long-term ambition, given the complexity of existing supply chains, the changes in approach required by a range of players, and the yet unknown technological and research developments that lie ahead.
Remanufacturing is a key element of a circular economy, taking used products through a series of steps to bring them back to “as new” specification with a warranty to match. There is a huge potential to grow remanufacturing in Scotland and a good foundation already exists in many industry sectors in Scotland, including aerospace, automotive, energy, ICT, rail and marine. The Scottish Institute for Remanufacture (SIR) was created to stimulate innovation through collaborative projects between industry and universities, supported by joint- partnership funding from the Scottish Funding Council and Zero Waste Scotland.
Jacqueline Balfour, Business Development Manager at SIR will discuss how remanufacturing and SIR fit into the circular economy, the support SIR can provide to business and case studies of remanufacturing projects funded by SIR.
This will be followed by a presentation from a local business who will describe how they have deployed remanufacturing in their business and how they are engaged with SIR
Finally, Lynn Wilson, Sector Manager for Manufacturing and Remanufacturing will discuss the programs that Zero Waste Scotland have, to support businesses transition to the circular economy.
