Bulk solids, or particulate solids, refer to granular, or powder-like substances that are handled, transported, and stored in large quantities. Efficient handling of these materials is key in industries ranging from food, chemicals, plastics and pharmaceuticals. It has been said that plants that handle particulate solids work typically at around 40-50% of their design specification and are beset by a range of problems, such as poor or unreliable flow, blockages, equipment wear, particle degradation and segregation.  This workshop will highlight the role simulation can play in design, selection and troubleshooting bulk solids handling processes and plant for operational and energy efficiency.  The focus will be on industrial practice.

The field associated with Bulk Solids Handling has always been open to a variety of science and engineering disciplines and important contributions have come from Chemical, Civil, and Mechanical Engineering and Physics, all have contributed to the growth in simulation methods and technologies.  Arguably the most important development in the past 20 years has been the progress in discrete element modelling [DEM] which has reached wide industrial use through commercially available codes, alongside computational fluid dynamics and multi-body motion codes.

Leading the workshop will be Professor Don McGlinchey.  Don is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Academic Lead of the Digital Transformation and Intelligent Maintenance Research Group at Glasgow Caledonian University where he has worked for more than twenty years.  He has over thirty years’ experience in the area of bulk solids handling and has undertaken consultancy projects for both Multinational Companies and SME’s, and delivered short courses in Europe, USA and the UK. Don is the editor of three books, the most recent of which is Simulations in Bulk Solids Handling, and has authored over 50 research articles.  He is a member of the European Federation of Chemical Engineers Working Party on the Mechanics of Particulate Solids, and a member of NAFEMS CFD Working Group and editor of the International Journal of CFD Case Studies.

Following a presentation and open discussion Don will be happy to discuss any particular solids handing issues with individual attendees or companies.
