250311 Institution of Engineers Scotland Lecture

The future of satellite communication
March 11th, 2025 6:30 PM   through   7:30 PM

In today’s world, everywhere you look people are using smartphones to stay connected: while at home, commuting or travelling to other countries. However, there are places where its not possible to connect to the internet including remote areas, and underdeveloped countries. The vision is for everyone, no matter where they are, to be connected all the time to the internet via satellites directly to smartphones. This means that the number of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites must dramatically increase along with the number of parabolic antennas.

Enter Celestia@HeriotWatt University world leaders with a new disruptive technology: Electronically Scanned Phased Array Antenna Gateway. In this presentation, Carol will introduce us to Celestia-UK, explain their Gateway technology and why the Space Industry is important for Scotland.

Dr Carol Marsh OBE has had a long and successful career in the field of Electronics, with an expertise in programmable logic; as a designer, a functional lead and now as the leader of a team of innovators in a start-up company. Carol is passionate about promoting engineering and volunteers for the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) as a Vice President, Trustee, Professional Registration Advisor and Interviewer. Carol is Deacon of the Hammermen of Edinburgh, an Inductee into the Scottish Engineering Hall of Fame (2023), a Visiting Professor at Edinburgh Napier University and Past President of the Women’s Engineering Society (WES).
