The Entrepreneurial Journey of Investment
CeeD are delighted to be partnering with Angel Investor Brian Williamson, and the team at Johnston Carmichael Accountancy, to take you through the investment journey, including insights into grant funding, R&D tax credits and more. Also in attendance for this session, will be Mark Beaumont from Eos Advisory, and Kevin Walls from Scottish Edge.
The structure
The early years – An interactive discussion on investment from bootstrapping to equity. An understanding of what aspects of your own value proposition will be attractive to investors, lenders or even buyers.
The growth years – Funding growth capital requirements from either debt, R&D tax relief, grants or follow on investment. What will suit your business and how you should approach each.
The destination – A discussion on how to make 1+1=3 and benefit from the buyer having a post-acquisition upside. Once a potential buyer is found a delve into the process of selling - what to expect and what to prepare for.
The speakers
Dr Brian Williamson
Dr Brian Williamson. His considerable expertise in working in this sector ideally positions him to identify market weaknesses and ultimately has led him to establish this service. Brian’s R&D experience started in 2008 when he joined the founders of Jumpstart. As CEO he led the company to become the fastest growing SME in Scotland between 2010 and 2013. He secured external investment from BGF and the sale of the business to ABGi in 2019.
Mark Beaumont
Mark Beaumont became a Partner at Eos Advisory in 2019 and has helped lead the business through a period of significant growth, investing in predominantly Scottish science and technology addressing key global issues in healthcare and environmental health. Mark Beaumont spent the first chapter his career building teams around sporting success and is publicly known as an athlete and BBC broadcaster. He still holds the 18,000-mile circumnavigation cycling record in a time of 78 days. Mark’s degree education was in Economics & Politics, and for a decade and a half worked with a UK’s leading mid-market private equity firm. Mark is Patron for Entrepreneurial Scotland, Honorary President for Scottish Student Sport, Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and was honoured in the Queens New Year’s honours for services to sport and charity.
Kevin Walls
Kevin had a long and successful career with Sainsburys for 12 years in management, leadership and senior project management before joining the world of supporting start up entrepreneurs. After joining Entrepreneurial Spark in 2015 he threw himself into the growth mindset world and demonstrated a passion for helping entrepreneurs succeed in their ventures. After 2 years and 200+ businesses supported, it was time to join the amazing Scottish EDGE team, initially as Relationship Manager, and now COO.
Paula Skinner
Paula is a corporate partner at Harper Macleod LLP and is head of the entrepreneurial team specialising in advising entrepreneurs and scale up businesses on equity investments and exits. She works with businesses at all stages of their life cycle – from inception of idea to funding to exit. Paula previously worked in-house at a venture capitalist and within the investment team at Scottish Enterprise. Her team completed over 180 transactions over the past 3 years, a mixture of equity investments and M&A transactions.
