Addressing the challenges of decommissioning - the National Decommissioning Centre (NDC)

Registration is closed for this event
Developed as part of the Aberdeen City Deal, the National Decommissioning Centre is an ambitious £38m collaboration between the University of Aberdeen, the Net Zero Technology Centre and industry. Through collaborative R&D between industry and academia the NDC will address the challenges of decommissioning redundant, offshore oil and gas assets and pipeline.
May 5th, 2022 10:00 AM   through   11:15 AM

The cost of decommissioning or re-purposing over the next decade, what is estimated to be about 100 offshore oil and gas platforms and 7,500km of pipeline on the UK Continental Shelf is estimated at about £46bn.

To deliver cost savings and support the wider energy industry as it responds to the on-going transformation of the sector and the transition to net-zero, Scotland has established the National Decommissioning Centre (NDC). The NDC will support this work by providing a means for industries (e.g. oil and gas, renewables, nuclear, re-manufacturing and marine, to collaborate and innovate to develop new products, processes and services that can be commercialised to meet the challenges of the decommissioning sector's requirements.

The NDC's will transform current approaches to sustainable decommissioning and create competitive advantage in the North East of Scotland through world-class research.

The director of the NDC is Professor Richard Neilson. The focus of Professor Neilson's research, since 2002, has been in the context of oil and gas, subsea engineering and decommissioning. He currently leads the NDC's input into the development of an underwater laser cutting system.

On Thursday 5th May, Professor Neilson will talk to CeeD about his work and how the NDC is already engaging with the sector and how you can get involved and you can sign up here to hear him.

In February, the NDC was a finalist for the Knowledge Exchange award at CeeD's flagship Annual Industry Awards 2022.
