Leonardo has excelled in the design and manufacture of military avionics products ever since our site at Crewe Toll was quickly constructed during WW2 and the manufacturing of Gyro Gunsights for the Hawker Hurricane was transferred from Manchester to Edinburgh.

Over the last 74 years, geopolitical events have shaped the market demand in this sector, and one of the most significant for the UK Defence Industry was the collapse of the former USSR in the late eighties and early nineties. Soon after this key historical event, the first of two Gulf Wars unfolded and by the end of the second Gulf War, the nature of conflict in some regions of the world had dramatically changed the market demand for avionics. In particular, Leonardo saw an increased demand for radar and heat seeking missile countermeasures and radar surveillance capabilities.

For Leonardo, these events led to diversified customer requirements as they in turn responded to market demand. This presented the company with a number of challenges in new technologies and product capabilities, with ever increasing demands for higher reliability, lower through life costs, and a reduction in size and weight for smaller platforms including unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV).

In response, our engineering design teams have had to diversify their skills and knowledge of emerging technologies to operate within much tighter timescales and budget constraints. Equally, the key suppliers to Leonardo have undergone similar challenges in technology and capability, and been ‘partnered’ with us on this journey of product diversification, particularly over the last ten to fifteen years. Finally, our manufacturing capabilities have been transformed over this period with the establishment of two Manufacturing Centres of Excellence (CoE) in Lasers and Microelectronics. Our employees’ diversity of skills and expertise  has ensured that both CoEs are recognised as World Class.

David Graham ( VP Capability Major Air Programmes) and Bill Sinclair ( Industrial Engineering Manager) would like to share with our CeeD colleagues, how our company has responded to the changing market demands, and how our product diversification has retained and strengthened our position as market leader for the majority of our merchant supply products.
