Why apprenticeships?

The programmes are designed specifically to meet the needs of your business, bringing together academic expertise and real world experience, transferring knowledge for mutual benefit.

Since 1821 Heriot Watt's focus has been on practical application of knowledge and learning for the betterment of society and advancement of industry.

Today they are a world leading university with 5 campuses worldwide, educating tomorrow’s professionals and generating pioneering research, making a difference in the real world. How does it work?

The Graduate Apprenticeship scheme provides flexible, work-based learning and is open to existing employees and new recruits. Apprentices will continue to work for your organisation and will be required to spend an agreed amount of time each week on the Heriot-Watt campus in Edinburgh.

The work-based learning is part of the approved apprenticeship framework. Apprentices will develop and demonstrate their new skills in the work place.

How will the programme be delivered?

Study will include standard classroom sessions with other apprentices taught by our leading academics and industry experts, as well as via online learning modules, directed learning and work based projects.

What is the learning?

They will work with you to ensure the learning experience of your graduate level apprentices develops them into the graduates you need. They will do this through initial programme design and regular update meetings to ensure that your apprentices meet all of the required outcomes over the 4 year programme. They will help devise projects and identify your desired outcomes for the mutual benefit of the individual and business, while meeting the outcomes of the apprenticeship framework.

Each apprentice will have a dedicated academic supervisor and they will arrange regular supervisory meetings, either on-site or via conference call or Skype.

What is the qualification attained?

Successful apprentices will be awarded a BHons degree in their chosen field of study.

How are the apprenticeships funded and will my organisation have to contribute?

Skills Development Scotland has awarded Heriot-Watt University funding for 25 places on each of the 3 Graduate Level Apprenticeships for entry in 2017. These positions are fully funded and there is no fees charged to either employer or apprentice.
