Procurement Management

Leonardo MW Airborne and Space Systems can be regarded as a high technology, high value, low volume design and manufacturing company. By definition, the majority of our products perform critical functions on board military and civil aircraft either as a complete system or as key elements of a system such as a radar receiver, transmitter or processor, commonly referred to as ‘black boxes’. These black boxes range in price from circa £150K to £500k depending on complexity, function and contract conditions and may be delivered at less than one per month to twenty per month.  Our manufacturing strategy is to undertake assembly, integration and test of major ‘bought in’ modules and sub-assemblies in order to deliver a fully tested, environmentally screened, interchangeable ‘black box’ to our customers.

Given a typical product work breakdown structure, the procured content can represent up to 80% of the product value, the remainder being associated with in house labour including project management and other functions. As the majority of our product content is assembled and tested out with our company in the Supply Chain, special care must be given to how we manage the procurement of these items. This is because Leonardo does not have direct control over these sub-contracted manufacturing processes (or in subsequent lower supply chain tiers).  It is this arena that opportunities for defects can arise resulting in escaping or latent defects in our procured parts that may manifest themselves as inspection or test defects in Leonardo or worst case, in the hands of our customers.

This workshop will discuss the challenges Leonardo has encountered from purchasing high value, high technology modules and sub-assemblies and how we manage the procurement of said items as a cross functional team using our Manufacturing and Supply Chain Way best practice construct.
