The World has turned upside down for manufacturers  - and their supply chains have turned on their head!

What do we face as we now all look towards the new normal?

Many companies in the manufacturing sector are experiencing serious supply chain issues, material delivery problems and material quality problems – the root causes likely related to a mix of Covid-19 impacts, raw material shortages, inability to increase capacity (manpower challenges and full employment), Brexit and potentially inflation rates and cost of materials jumping up, and so on.

CeeD, in partnership with the Supply Chain Management Group (SCMG), are running a workshop to explore some of theses issues and some the mitigating elements manufacturing companies have been employing to work their way through this challenge.

The session will be led by SCMG CEO, Martin MurphySome of the experience and expertise from SCMG has been focussed on:

  • Shorter supply chains and local suppliers now become more attractive
  • Sustainable sourcing
  • Security and continuity of supply
  • Looking at the footprint of a business with longer supply chains, outsourced and a focus on low cost sourcing now has to consider the cost of freight and logistics which completely changes the economics
  • Trade barriers where there were none previously or existing barriers that are getting higher and the issues of local content in relation to end markets
  • Relationships with suppliers define the architecture of supply chains and the fixed cost of this operating model defines 80% of the cost of doing business that no amount of lean thinking or agile manufacturing will compensate

SCMG will draw from the wide data-source of experience including some of the knowledge of current projects looking at some of the following:

  • Relocating plants to be closer to supply sources or customers
  • Equipment specification to reduce energy consumption initially to reduce carbon footprint but now to respond to higher energy costs
  • Automation considered from an efficiency perspective now necessary due to skills and labour shortages
  • Operational excellence and Industry 4.0
  • Developing suppliers and becoming a preferred customer in a seller’s market
