Innovation is a risky business. Whether you’re an existing business or just starting up, it can be costly and time-consuming to launch a new, sustainable product that’s attractive to the end user.

“Good design is one of the most vital catalysts for growth and (return on investment) that a company can employ” (McKinsey) and should be one of the first things manufacturers and innovators consider. Too often, the design team is brought in to "dress up the product".

If introduced early in the innovation process with proper consideration of whether something can be manufactured, what it can be made from, who is going to use it and how, and where they'll do that can reduce the cost of new product or process development as well as time to market and, importantly, mitigate against product failure.
